"Devrimci" = "Revolutionary", not "progressive".

[edit]

Translating "devrimci" as "progressive" is not correct. In some cases the word can be translated as "reformist", but "revolutionary" is the generally correct way of translating it, and surely is what was intended by the founders. One needs only to take a look at the same article in german and french, where it has been correctly translated as "Revolutionären" and "révolutionnaires" respectively. The same word can also be seen in the following articles, where it has been translated correctly:

Yes, that must be changed. Its indeed "revolutionary", not "progressive". --Comrade-yutyo (talk) 22:16, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose How a name is translated is largely irrelevant. Only the common name in English matters, correctly translated or not. In google scholar, "Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey", DISK, -wikipedia produces 877 hits[1] in English, "Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey", DISK, -wikipedia only results in 136 hits[2] in English.--Labattblueboy (talk) 17:39, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the earlier double post, I am not very used to editing wikipedia articles. It is a bit problematic to speak of a "common English name" for a Turkish trade union that is peripheral at best even in the current Turkish political scene (which is the reason to why we are even having this discussion in the first place). Are we just supposed to ignore the fact that we are talking about one of the major left-wing organizations in Turkish history (which during the entirety of the 1970's adopted a strong radical position and even took to militant action in some cases), and be blind to the fact that the name is clearly intended to be related to marxist political theory (which is the case regarding all the other left-wing Turkish organizations linked to above, who also use and share the name "revolutionary/devrimci"), just because the organization in question seems to have decided to mistranslate it's name on some occasions in order to come off as less radical to international organizations and the modern English discourse? I am not implying that the organization is still "revolutionary" in the pre-1980 sense of the word. I just want to clarify that this is not just a matter of "interpretation". It is a matter of misrepresenting the clear connotations the name gives to the Turkish ear (and surely to most of, if not all of, it's Turkish speaking members even in this day). For the sake of objectivity, both translations should be given at least. Wikipedia is not supposed to be a place for revisionist history. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.251.245.252 (talk) 21:49, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
WP:COMMONNAME is one of guiding principles for articles titles. Unless guided by a different set of naming guidelines, article titles are normally the subject's most common name in English. In this cases there are a healthy number of English language resources that refer to the subject, certainly sufficient to assess the most common name in English. I could understand it being frustrating for a name to employ a different translation across language. However, it's not my place to judge that. I will simply defend the title that is most common amongst reliable sources in Egnlish.--Labattblueboy (talk) 16:54, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: Devrimci means revolutionary. Google hits are irrelevant in this case; the issue is so peripheral, either version gets less than 1000 hits.Cavann (talk) 20:46, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Meaning of DİSK

[edit]

DİSK means "Devrimci İşçi Sendikaları Federasyonu", which translates for "Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey". "Devrimci" literally means "revolutionary", not "progressive" by any means. The title shall be changed in that manner to "Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey". --Comrade-yutyo (talk) 22:19, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
